Diabetic Alert Dogs:

Diabetic Alert Dogs alert diabetics to hypoglycemia, or low blood sugars.  These dogs help save lives by alerting their owners before their blood sugar drops too low and they lose consciousness, which can cause coma or death.

The Pooch Academy owner, Jessica Lohry, has trained her dogs, Alice and Libby, to alert her to impending hypo- and hyperglycemia.  Over 2011, she trained her first two dogs for other people, Hudson and Inga. These dogs were sold at cost (IE: all of her time was volunteer). In order to keep training these dogs, she'll have to charge for her services. It will take support, time, and funding* to accomplish this goal.

*Service dogs typically cost between $15,000 and $25,000 to train over a 1-2 year period due to the labor and costs involved.
